Let me start by saying, if you don’t have a wireless remote/trigger for your camera, put one in your Amazon shopping cart NOW! I’ve had my Nikon wireless remote for more than 5 years, I’ve never had to change the battery, and it only cost me $20. Over the years it’s allowed me to get in countless shots with my girls. It’s great for getting the holiday family portrait and capturing Christmas morning with the least amount of chaos. And it even comes in handy when I’m taking time-lapse photos like star trails.

These are all great reasons when and why you’d want to use a camera remote. But how about a couple of reasons you may not have ever thought of?

Put the kids in control

Most children love when you let them have a little bit say-so. Set up your camera on a tripod with the correct settings, turn it to remote mode, and hand the remote over to your kids. Have them stand in front of the camera, and tell them they can push the button whenever they want. If they are anything like my kids they will immediately want to see the pictures on the back of the camera, but promise to show them all the pictures when they are done in order to keep the fun going. Try not to tell them what to do, just gently encourage them to have fun, express silliness, happiness, love with one another, solo time, and anything else they want to do.

Unattended photo booth

For my daughters 3rd birthday we setup a carnival for her and her friends. We setup a Photo Booth with a backdrop and props for guests to take fun pictures, but I didn’t want to “work” the Photo Booth the entire time, I wanted to enjoy the party. I made sure the settings on the camera were correct and left the remote with a small note on the table with the props. The note read “When ready, point the remote at the camera and press the button. A white light will show it worked and the it will take the picture two seconds later. Take as many pictures as you’d like, have fun, and be sure the leave the remote and note here for the next guests to enjoy!” The pictures turned out so good and I love that I was still able to enjoy the party!

Arm-less selfies

I would hazard a guess that most of us loathe the selfie, yet that doesn’t really stop us from taking them does it? There’s got to be a better way to capture those priceless, spur-of-the-moment memories than with a grainy smartphone camera and an outstretched arm in the corner of the picture. For better “selfies” vow to take a few extra moments to pull out your camera, dial-in the settings, turn it to remote mode and set your camera on something… anything stable, the right height, and in good light. Once everything is setup and you have the remote it your hand, it’s easy to take several pictures and just have fun in the moment. Not only will you not have an arm or stick in your frame, but you’ll also capture so much more of your beautiful surroundings!
